Giants quarterback Jameis Winston channels his Christian faith after another dramatic victory
New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston has consistently preached his Christian faith throughout his NFL career, which includes a real moment where he hoped God would "deliver me from pick-sixes."
But after another win on Sunday – his second since taking over as the Giants’ starting quarterback following Jaxson Dart’s knee injury in Week 2 – Winston revealed the Bible verse he was wearing on his wristband.
Deonte Banks, the Giants’ first-round cornerback, was in the middle of a post-game interview after sealing his team’s victory with a 96-yard pick-six on fourth-and-goal as the clock hit zero. Winston crept over and started reading Philippians 3.13-14 off his wristband.

"Forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, my brother!" Winston shouted before embracing Banks and looking into the camera. "That’s one thing I do."
Then, it was Winston’s turn to speak with CBS Sports’ Aditi Kinkhabwala, where his faith shined once again.

"Praise God," he said. "Unwavering faith, people coming through when they needed to come through. It was only by the grace of God, man. There were so many supernatural things that happened today, and that was one of them. I believe in miracles, but that was preparation, that was hard work, and that was just a divine interaction for Tae Banks just getting off his injury, never giving up and coming back to get a pick-six and seal the day. Man, wow. Wow. Thank you, Lord."
Winston channeled his inner reverend when asked by Kinkhabwala what he tells himself when the game goes through roller-coaster ups and downs like it did on Sunday. He threw two interceptions, but had three touchdowns in what NFL fans have come to know as "The Jameis Winston Experience."
"I’m so grateful for the word of God," he said, looking dead into the camera lens. "One thing I do is forgetting that which is behind me and reaching forward to what is ahead. You think that I’m joking, but Philippians 3.13 states this, and you have to do it no matter the circumstances, conditions or facts. Desire what you will love, and I wanted this team to win a game.
"It looked like the odds were against us – it really did. But God found a way. How great is He? His thoughts are higher than our thoughts, His ways are better than our ways. That’s only His grace."
Winston also shouted out his head coach, John Harbaugh, a man of similar Christian faith who now owns a 3-1 record in his first four games leading the Giants.
"Our head coach is tenacious. Our head coach is a Kingdom man. Our head coach is instilling every one of these qualities in us, and it’s really a beautiful thing to see," Winston said. "Shout out to the defensive line, shout out to the defense again, shout out to the offensive line, and praise God. Thank you."
The Giants find themselves in a rare situation compared to the previous decade worth of seasons, as they are in sole possession of the NFC East lead at 3-1 since November 2015.
New York will aim to continue that trend next week against a division foe, the Washington Commanders, where Winston will continue to lean on his preparation, teammates, and his faith to keep the winning going for the Giants.
