Jets' defense finally snaps brutal streak with Minkah Fitzpatrick interception vs Bears

The New York Jets gave their fans something to cheer about even as the team has failed to get much in the first half of Sunday’s matchup against the Chicago Bears.

Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent dropped back to pass in the second quarter and tried to find Colton Loveland. But Jets safety Minkah Fitzpatrick stepped in front of the pass for the interception. The Jets defense celebrated and the offense got back on the field and finished the following drive with a field goal to make the game 7-3 at that point.

The turnover ended a pretty terrible streak – even by Jets standards.

Fitzpatrick’s pick was the Jets’ first interception in 637 days. New York was on a 20-game streak of failing to get that interception. Ashtyn Davis had the last interceptions for the Jets, which occurred all the way back on Jan. 5, 2025, against the Miami Dolphins. He had two in that game.

Nobody had an interception last season.

New York’s defense has shown some life in the early part of the 2026 season.

The Jets were plus-3 in point differential coming into the game against the Bears. New York held the Tennessee Titans to just 10 points in Week 1 and allowed 20 points against the Green Bay Packers in Week 2. Week 3 was tough as they played the Detroit Lions. They lost 31-24.

With the defense holding the Bears to only a touchdown through most of the first half, most would expect the team to turn the turnover into some points. Geno Smith and Gang Green need to find a way to score while the Bears have a backup quarterback going against them.
