Two Ole Miss students found dead as packaged kratom is recovered at two sites: officials

Two University of Mississippi students were found dead amid a drug-related investigation, officials confirmed to Fox News Digital.

Lafayette County Metro Narcotics said in a news release that law enforcement is investigating the deaths of two college-aged individuals found at separate locations. Authorities have not confirmed the deaths are connected, but packaged kratom sold from a retail store was recovered in both investigations.

"We do not have confirmed information indicating that kratom or any other substance was a contributing factor in either death," the agency said.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, the University of Mississippi confirmed that both of the deceased were students there.

"The university is heartbroken by the recent loss of two students and extends our condolences to their families, friends and loved ones during this difficult time," a campus spokesman said.

Law enforcement is treating the deaths as two separate investigations, and officials have not confirmed whether any substance contributed to either death.

Officials asked the public "to avoid speculation regarding the circumstances or cause of either death while these investigations remain ongoing."

"Local, state and federal partners are working collaboratively to gather the facts and provide answers as quickly and responsibly as possible. We are also working closely with the families involved and ask that their privacy be respected during an incredibly difficult time," Lafayette County Metro Narcotics said.

The university statement said "considerable unverified information is circulating on social media and in the community regarding these recent student deaths."

"The Coroner’s Office has confirmed two student deaths, and University Police are not aware of any additional student deaths. University Police remain in contact with local law enforcement, and the causes of the two deaths are still under investigation," the university said in a statement. 

"We encourage our community not to speculate about the circumstances or repeat information that has not been officially confirmed. We appreciate your understanding and support for our campus community during this difficult time."
