US envoy meets with Zelensky after Trump says Patriot missiles will be sent to Ukraine

President Trump's special envoy for Ukraine met Monday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as the White House prepares to provide additional weapons to Kyiv in its fight against Russia.

Keith Kellogg, who has been tasked with helping to broker an end to the war in Ukraine, spoke with Zelensky shortly after Trump said the United States will be sending Patriot air defense munitions to Ukraine.

Zelensky in a post on X called it a "productive conversation."

"We discussed the path to peace and what we can practically do together to bring it closer," Zelensky wrote. "This includes strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, joint production, and procurement of defense weapons in collaboration with Europe. And of course, sanctions against Russia and those who help it.

"We hope for U.S. leadership, as it is clear that Moscow will not stop unless its unreasonable ambitions are curbed through strength," the Ukrainian leader added. "I thank Keith Kellogg for this visit to Ukraine. I am grateful to President Trump for the important signals of support and the positive decisions for both our countries. We deeply value the support of the American people."

Trump last week said the U.S. would be providing defensive weapons to Ukraine after the Pentagon instituted a pause on shipments to Kyiv. The president has in recent weeks expressed increasing public frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the strikes Russia has carried out in Ukraine.

Trump last week said a deal has been struck with NATO to send weapons to Ukraine, with the military alliance bearing the brunt of the cost. On Sunday, Trump said the U.S. would provide an unspecified number of air defense systems, but indicated the U.S. isn’t going to be paying for the supply.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 after amassing troops at the border. Trump campaigned on a pledge to end the war within 24 hours, a timeframe he later claimed was "sarcastic."
