Senate Republican says Comey and Brennan 'are as popular as male pattern baldness'

Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) on Thursday slammed former FBI Director James Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan for being disliked among Washington’s political elite.

“I know people who have worked with them closely, and maybe talk to people closely, those people will tell you that they're about as popular as male pattern baldness,” Kennedy said of the two during an appearance on Fox News’s “The Faulkner Focus.”

Kennedy said Comey and Brennan weren’t “ethical people” and that he’d hire “the guy who salts fries at McDonald's” before either one of them.

Both men were nominated to serve as the head of their respective federal agencies under former President Obama.

The New York Times reported this week that both men have been targeted by the Trump administration for their actions regarding the president.

Comey was a registered Republican until 2016, when he became an unaffiliated voter. Some believe he influenced President Trump’s first campaign win after opening a follow-up investigation into the Democratic nominee at the time, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, two weeks prior to the election.

Trump fired Comey the next year and Brennan in 2017 for criticizing his leadership while in office.

“This action is part of a broader effort by Mr. Trump to suppress freedom of speech & punish critics. It should gravely worry all Americans, including intelligence professionals, about the cost of speaking out,” Brennan wrote in 2018 after Trump revoked his security clearances.

“My principles are worth far more than clearances. I will not relent,” he added.

The Department of Justice in July launched a criminal investigation into Comey and Brennan  connected to their 2017 investigation into President Trump’s ties with Russia.

“They're just not honest people, and if they broke the law, they should be be held accountable,” Kennedy told host Harris Faulkner.

Comey also drew the ire of people in Trump's orbit when he posted a message on social media of a photo of sea shells he said he found on the beach that spelled out "86 47," a message some interpreted as calling for Trump's death.
